RICHMOND
TIMES DISPATCH (VA)
"For as much as hip-hop culture has
influenced the lifestyle of many Americans,
much of its history has been obscured, lost
in the shade of the record biz.
But on the outskirts of what's good at the moment,
there are music collectors piecing together
discarded rap documents. One of those music
sponges is a former Richmonder, Tom Thumz (aka
Dr. Delay), whose recent release is a 70-minute
DJ mix of head-scratching hip-hop rarities.
Thumz plays a musical butcher, cutting up vinyl
with the brash humor of an obsessive crate digger.
Although the Brooklyn transplant flexes his
turntable chops, his strength here is in his
selections, most of which will have you wishing
for a track listing.
Despite songs from the underground big names
of Kool Keith, Lord Finesse and Showbiz &
AG, most of these tracks are the sort of heavyweight
rarities scrounged up from dollar bins.
Thumz drops oddity platters like Steinski's
"The Motorcade Sped On," a stomping
beat tale of the JFK assassination, blended
with De La Soul's 1989 test-press "Double-Huey
Skit."
Most will never recognize names such as Raw
Dope Posse, Funkmaster Wiz or the Fila Fresh
Crew, but their songs tell of an important time
when beats would snap necks and it was a sign
of lyrical skill to "go Rambo" like
Nikki Rap n Scratch.
Ever one to shine light on the darkness of the
past, Thumz winds down the mix with Carver High
School's "Get It Together," a single
that illuminates his purpose. This mix is not
nostalgia, instead it is respect for kids who
were inspired and desperate enough to put beats
and rhymes on wax, but then were forgotten.

"I'll be honest - I often confuse Dr.
Delay and DJ Day (who I'll have a post from
coming soon)...not just because their names
are similar but mostly because both put out
kick ass mixes and edit tracks. With DELAY,
he's just released a power-pack double-CD set,
one of funkalcious b-boy tracks for you to wear
your Puma soles out to; the other a collection
of rare rap that never compromises quality simply
for the sake of obscurity.
I included the first 9 minutes or so of Well
Done, the b-boy mix; what's nuts is that Delay
manages to find at least a few dozen songs that
allows him to maintain the same upbeat groove
throughout the entire CD yet it without feeling
repetitive or redundant.
The second track is actually a bonus cut that
Delay includes at the end of Medium: Rare II,
a remix of "Life's a Bitch," by Nas,
feat. AZ. If I'm not mistaken, I think Delay
actually put this together on a whim for an
impromptu remix contest on Soulstrut.com but
it hardly sounds like something he slapped together.
I was never a huge fan of the original beat
to "Life's a Bitch," but I'm loving
how Delay gives this song a whole new sound
and feel. (Hint: white label needed!)
Both CDs are only available for a limited time
(I got #101 out of 250 limited run) so act fast
to order."
