ALL GOOD FUNK ALLIANCE
Featuring Swamburger & Alexandrah
"Weakness
of the Trade" B/W "Freedumbs"
(Remixes
by Marc Hype & Jim Dunloop and Doc Delay)
All
Good pulls two more tracks off their LP "Social
Comment" for this Single featuring Florida's
Swamburger & Alexandrah on vocals. They passed
the "Weakness" acapella baton to Berlin's
Marc Hype & Jim Dunloop who rework the song beautifully.
Brooklynite, Doc Delay flips the B-side banger "Freedumbs"
into a much more traditional hip hop sound.

NEW DOC DELAY MIXES -
REM Sleep Psych Mix & Medium: Rare III
REM
Sleep-
When Tom told me he was making a mix of "wizard
rock," my eyes were rolling around like stevie
wonder. All scepticism aside, this mix completely
blew my mind. It may take a couple listens for some
to appreciate, but this is real grown people music.
He keeps it simple, and almost folky in some parts,
but never fails to bring back that beat that is ever-so-present
in all of his productions.
Medium:
Rare 3 -
Over
the last 5 years, the demand for late 80s Indy Rap
records has grown exponentially, driving the price
for these rarities through the roof on the world wide
web. Delay scouers his brooklyn terrain for these
elusive artifacts, and weaves them together with precision
on the 3rd installment of this series.

DR.
DELAY -
RAJAZ METER (MIX CD)
Delay’s
latest, Rajaz Meter, veers across the pond, trading
classic hip hop for Arabic funk, further flexing his
vast digging erudition.
An individually-numbered, limited run of 250 (I got
230), Rajaz beholds 31 meticulously-presented lost
jewels. Delay’s also Funk Weapons' Art Director
and it shows in the detail of the cover design’s
screen-print. The sleeve houses an enlightening insert
explaining that the rajaz meter of the Bedouins caravan
song – the Huda, sung on desert treks –
corresponded with the rhythm of the camel’s
stride. It’s the prototype of all Arabic meters.
Delay
lights the torch with Baris Manco’s “Donence,”
and the Middle East/West dichotomy is set by one voice
instructing “Turkish music, listen” and
another letting everybody know this is straight out
of “Brooklyn fucking New York.” In the
two-slot is the first Tinariwen track, a band that
originated from Gadhafi’s Tuareg rebel camps
of Libya and Algeria, probably the first of their
ilk to employ electric guitars. A loping bassline
steers the reggae-tinged “Aldhechen Manin,”
one of the band’s many desert anthems for the
disenfranchised. Most of Delay’s other selections
from similar progenitors of the trade, like Turkey’s
Bunalimar and Ethiopia’s Swinging Addis, are
just as consistently entrancing.
A
few strike even harder. "Always In My Heart"
by Lebanon’s Elias Rahbani entices with flute,
lulls with lute and then takes us higher with a sashaying
keyboard lead. The inclusion of The Devil's Anvil,
whose only record Hard Rock From The Middle East hit
shelves the day the 1967 Arab-Israeli War broke, is
another high-water mark. Other choice picks include
Edip Akbayram, Selda – whose towering voice
is nothing short of a revelation – and The Cairo
Jazz Band’s closing onslaught of swing “Cleopatra.”
In terms of idiosyncrasy, Erkin Koray’s “Cemalim”
sounds like it could be a Turkish version of Creedence’s
“Who’ll Stop The Rain.”
Rajaz
Meter is a 52-minute medley of taut groove and mysterious
rhythm. Delay’s most obvious asset is taste,
but his d(ecks)terity, tablism touches and mixtape-requisite
self-promotion keep it moving briskly. Above all,
he proves that a music’s medium can be as essential
as the music itself.

ALL GOOD FUNK ALLIANCE
REC
All
Good
Funk Alliance drops this three-song funk bomb focusing
on their (nearly patented) electronic/funk/cutup sound
that is keen on bouncing bass, "old-school"
drum samples and major groove. Dub-master vocals snippets
and horn stabs dominate the mix in a sort of Coldcut
or Fort Knox Five style.
The
title track "REC" is masterfully mixed with
body-moving in mind. Elements pop in and out at key
moments, keeping the momentum going and the dancers
dancing.
The B-side starts off with Ancient Astronauts mix
of "REC", leading with a heavy blacksploitation
feel that jumps into a funky groove. I guess when
Funk is in your band name then FUNK is what you are
going to get. And it isn't retro-James Brown wannabe-funk.
This is modern funk mixing the best of hip hop and
funk and lots of percussion breakdowns. Sticking with
the general vibe of the EP, AGFA gives us a little
more MC action midway through the track as a flute
sample adds to the gritty-street vibe. Did I forget
to talk about the percussion breakdowns? I did. Well,
they are worth mentioning twice.
"Twang" gives us a bubbly-synth bass jumping
in and out of head-nodding beats. This one moves into
a Tosca area with the female word samples and gritty-keyboard
swells. 80's synth sound effects creep into the mix
and add a half-time swell to the driving beat.

- DR. DELAY
RULE OF THUMB EP
We
are truly proud to present Doc’s sophomore release
on the label, “Rule of Thumb.” This release
is a bit of an excursion for the label and covers
a lot of ground. “Rule ofThumb pt. 1 & 2”
will pack dance floors of all types, and hype up BBoy
cyphers alike. It is a walk through dozens of breaks
and beats as they mingle with an exciting Latin melody
and even delve into the world of Bounce music for
a moment. David Castillo, of Chicago, steps in with
his version of “Rule of Thumb.” This one
is a bit darker, but will melt faces just as the original.
“Filth” is a grimey, half-time, electronic
number, that meets somewhere between Lil Jon and Jimi
Hendrix. To wrap things up, Delay sneaks in a hidden
track that is unmarked on the record. He remixes Nas
and Az’s “Life’s a Bitch”
in a way that sticks to the songs original ‘94
era. Complete with his own cuts, Delay fully reinvigorates
this classic.

Dr.
Delay - "Psycrunk"
"There's
a lot of these popping up nowadays: mixtapes with
really slap-worthy titles and/or concepts, but with
totally flawless execution too. Dr. Delay must've
dropped a little acid and then sipped a little syrup
to make this one, blending dusty old psyche rock records
with acapellas and instrumentals from current crunk
and southern shit. Rattling off names wouldn't mean
a whole lot, since most of the psyche shit on here
is rarer than rare (excepting The Seeds, Paul Revere
and a few others) but suffice it to say that this
one sounds a lot better on the stereo than it looks
on paper. The one that convinced me was the subtle
blend of Rabekin's "Light Rain" with the
instrumental from "What Happened To That Boy"
– the swirling acoustic guitar (or sitar?) sounds
even more hypnotic over the Neptunes' sputtering percussion.
One thing, though: when you put the CD in iTunes,
the tracklist comes up saying "If you bought
a copy of Psycrunk, then there was a tracklist included
on the cover. If you downloaded it, you lose the right
to know what you're listening to." That's all
well and good, but what if I bought it and just want
to put it on my iPod? 30 tracks total; 60+ minutes."

"Tom Thumz, now better known as Dr. Delay, has
been a mainstay on Soul Strut for years now, contributing
quality mixes and knowledge on the bulletin boards.
He has blossomed into one of NYC's dopest underground
hip hop and funk DJ talents, even churning out popular
12's as a producer on the Funk Weapons label. Psycrunk
is his latest brainstorm, coupling rare psychedelic
rock with down south crunk music/acapellas. Sounds
zany, but he pulled it off quite nicely! Comes professionally
packaged in shrink wrap!"

This
2 CD Set Contains Pt 2 of the Rare Rap Series and a
scortching bboy mix that debuted on the homepage of
soulstrut.com.
The packages are limited to 250 copies and are SOLD
OUT.
"funkalicious
b-boy tracks for you to wear your Puma soles out to;
the other a collection of rare rap that never compromises
quality simply for the sake of obscurity... What's nuts
is that Delay manages to find at least a few dozen songs
that allows him to maintain the same upbeat groove throughout
the entire CD yet it never feels repetitive or redundant."
